Research shows that former President Donald Trump’s tariffs on China did indeed raise prices on consumers and businesses — despite his claims otherwise. The study found tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump did not meaningfully contribute to inflation. “The new Biden tariffs, like the more extensive ones that Trump has promised, will worsen US inflation. It is fair to debate how much the Biden tariffs will impact inflation because they are not nearly as widespread as what Trump imposed and what Trump is promising if he’s reelected. Trump enacted sweeping tariffs on $300 billion in Chinese imports, setting off a trade war between the world’s two biggest economies.

Now that the S & P 500 and most major stock market indexes are at or near historic highs, expect a raft of earnings and year-end price target revisions for the S & P 500 to be coming. First up with an upward revision was Brian Belski at BMO Capital, who Wednesday raised his year-end S & P target to 5,600 from 5,100. The median price target (half above, half below) is 5,200. Earnings for the rest of the year have been remarkably stable, but the key point is that each quarter is higher and a record for S & P 500 profits: 2024 S & P 500 quarterly earnings estimates Q2: $59.46 (record) Q3: $63.49 (record) Q4: $65.08 (record) Source: LSEG Valuations (roughly 20 times forward S & P 500 earnings) are pricey but not unreasonable given the continuing strength of the economy and the prospects of AI-boosted returns. New York CNN —The Dow Jones Industrial Average is, at best, an imperfect barometer of stock market activity among a narrow band of very large US companies. It’s clunky, and too limited in scope for any Wall Street pros to pay serious attention to it. “Mention ‘the Dow’ and, to most people, that means the stock market,” said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Financial, in a note to CNN. It’s just an index that tracks the stock market activity of 30 large US companies, from Amazon to McDonald’s to the Walt Disney Company. Market capitalization measures the total value of a company on the stock market.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit the 40,000 milestone for the first time on Thursday, about 19 months after the last time it crossed the 30,000 threshold. Since last passing 30,000 on Oct. 17, 2022, no Dow stock has seen a bigger percentage gain than Caterpillar – which has almost doubled in price. Keep in mind that the Dow is a price-weighted index that gives higher-priced stocks more influence. Five of the Dow's 30 stocks – Microsoft, Caterpillar, Goldman Sachs , Salesforce and American Express – have made up half of the index's overall gains in the journey from 30,000. Only one stock – Johnson & Johnson – is decisively lower since the Dow last crossed 30,000.

Microsoft 's total carbon emissions have risen nearly 30% since 2020 primarily due to the construction of data centers, the company said in its annual sustainability report Wednesday. However, its indirect emissions — those that stem from all other activities Microsoft engages in — increased 30.9% during the same period. The increase in Microsoft's indirect emissions is largely due to the building materials and hardware components, such as semiconductors, servers and racks, used in constructing more data centers. The expansion of data centers poses a challenge to tech companies that have set ambitious timelines to eliminate their carbon footprints. Goldman Sachs expects natural gas to fuel 60% of the increased power demand from data centers, while renewables will power the remaining 40%.

Power demand is expected to surge over the next decade driven primarily by artificial intelligence and data centers, with natural gas , renewable and utility stocks poised to benefit, according to Goldman Sachs. AI and data centers will consume 8% of U.S. power demand by 2030, compared with 3% currently, according to Goldman projections. Natural gas will power 60% of the growth, while renewables are expected to make up the other 40%, according to the investment bank. Goldman recommends that investors buy call options for stocks most levered to the coming power demand surge. These buy-rated stocks are attractive because their current volatility is well below their median implied volatility, according to Goldman.

Biden’s tariff plan likely won’t move the needle for monetary policy, said Ryan Sweet, chief US economist at Oxford Economics. “Consumers and producers often pay higher prices when tariffs are implemented.”That’s because tariffs tax imports when they come ashore, adding costs for US distributors, retailers and, ultimately, consumers. Worse, some businesses appeared to take advantage of the trade war by bumping up prices even higher. Container shipping imports from China to Mexico rocketed higher by 60% in January and 34% for the first quarter, Xeneta data shows. “It’s obvious that imports to this extent are not only for domestic purposes in Mexico,” he said.

New York CNN —If voters return former President Donald Trump to the White House, he’s promised to launch an unprecedented crackdown on immigration and even conduct mass deportations. Trump recently told Time that he would aim to deport 15 million to 20 million people, perhaps by using the National Guard. Even though consumer prices are no longer skyrocketing, the cumulative impact of three years of high inflation is painful. “Most Americans view high inflation and high prices as unfair. But immigration remains a major concern for voters in the 2024 election and Trump has made it a centerpiece of his campaign.

As meme stocks once again dominate discourse on Wall Street, a Goldman Sachs basket is benefiting as hedge funds try to cover themselves. Goldman's "short basket," known officially as the GS Most Short Rolling Index, has jumped along with the resurgence of the meme-stock craze seen this week. When the original meme-stock mania took place, hedge funds rushed to cover their short positions as everyday investors squeezed them. GameStop short sellers lost almost $1 billion in Monday's rally. That experience even led to the demise of some hedge funds like Melvin Capital .
